Last February I photographed some Union Pacific trains between Sumner and Tacoma and promised myself I’d be back in the spring and summer months, and I did make more than one trip to the area this past spring.
But more recently on Saturday July 30, 2022 I went back to North Puyallup with news another O-GLSE was coming north. One nice thing about the garbage train is knowing it will not stop at Fife to work. I scouted a few of the locations I was interested in I had not photographed yet but decided on a spot just south of the SR-161 highway overpass at the 98th Ave E grade crossing. This is at MP 152.1 and has signals that I figured would add a bit of interest. Moments after parking I heard horns blowing in the distance and looking down the tracks saw a train approaching! Talk about good timing! Had the camcorder set up and turned it on and positioned my self for photos.
At 12:18 PM the O-GLSE with units 7830/7721 on the head end passed by.
A few minutes later the rear DPU’s, 5818/9022 went by. Took a roister photo of the 5818. I’d say it is in need of a repaint.
As I mentioned I took video of the empty garbage train.

With the train gone I decided for a view of the overall scene.
It is interesting to remember that this was once Milwaukee Road main line. It appears though that this particular signal was a later UP replacement.
Milwaukee Road trains leaving Tacoma to head east had a long trip ahead of them after passing this location. Makes me wish that I had photographed a Milwaukee Road train here. The Milwaukee may be gone but at least this part of the main line is still active.
